Khan Academy (khanacademy.org) brings a whole new dimension to free educational math tools. It’s a huge compilation of high-quality video tutorials by reputable instructors on subjects for kids in middle school, through high school, and even into college. If your child is in any of these grades, or even younger, this is definitely a site to become familiar with as soon as possible, because it can act as an interactive reference through many years of your child’s intellectual development. The site boasts more than 141,600,000 lessons and continues to grow.
After reviewing its videos, students can test their knowledge with interactive quizzes on the subject matter, simply by clicking the green button above the upper right-hand corner of the video to practice the specific concept. If kids have trouble arriving at the correct answer, they can choose to reveal a variety of hints, one at a time, to help them along in their quest to find the solution. If they run into problems, the hints encourage them to try again and again until they succeed.
The site was an indispensible tool when I was trying to teach my 6th grader how to understand the surface area of cubes, cylinders, rectangular prisms and more, for an upcoming test. In contrast to regular classroom lessons, he was able to review the lesson over and over until he understood the concepts. When he was ready to test his knowledge, he felt more accomplished with each victory on the free surface area practice quiz. Spending quality time on the site gave him the ability to go into his math test with renewed confidence that was reflected in his grade!
Other math topics on the site include arithmetic and pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability, statistics, precalculus, calculus, differential equations and linear algebra.
Science is well represented as well with topics that include biology, chemistry, healthcare and medicine, physics, and more. Students can also sharpen their skills in finance and economy, humanities and select comprehensive achievement tests.
Khan Academy is a modern-day encyclopedia that no one should be without.
