FCAT season is upon us!!

It’s that time of year again in the Florida educational system — time for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Tests (FCAT). Although there’s always controversy as to whether or not there’s too much emphasis put on the results and too much stress put on youngsters, there’s no disputing the fact that the tests are a requirement and we all want our kids to do well on them.

I recently came across a great free online educational resource to help kids practice their skills.  The Florida Department of Education offers a nice array of sample tests on their website to help children practice the areas of study they’ll be responsible for during that school year. Check it out at:

Since each grade focuses on a specific set of subjects for testing, the site is conveniently broken down by subject and then by grade. The free sample tests are available as pdf downloads and they have the same look and feel as the actual tests. They are a valuable resource to help kids get an idea of some of the materials on the test, get a feeling for the way the materials will be presented, and practice the unique way questions should be answered so they don’t lose credit for failing to fill in the answer sheets correctly.

I rely heavily on this learning tool to help my son prepare for his FCAT tests. Also available for download are the answer keys, which supply explanations as well as the answers and the benchmarks being tested with each problem. The answer keys also explain why the other multiple choice answer possibilities are wrong.

Some FCAT tests are given on paper, while others are taken on computer. For tests that are given on the computer, students have the option of printing out pdf sample tests or downloading a free piece of software that launches free online sample tests in a format similar to the official test. Of course, as with their printed counterparts, the computer-generated sample tests are smaller and less comprehensive.

The actual test will be longer and cover more benchmarks, but the sample tests are a great educational tool for familiarizing kids with the test format.

Good luck to all kids taking their FCATs!
